A VERY FINE KINGFISHER AND HONGMU TABLE SCREEN    清 酸枝木框點翠花鳥紋插屏

Of upright rectangular shape, the panel is finely decorated with a pair of birds perching on a branch above various flowers including chrysanthemum, narcissus, and lingzhi, along with irregular rockwork on the bottom, the side with flowering branch issuing from rock, all crafted in kingfisher and other feathers of turquoise, purple, and golden tones. The hongmu frame is carved with stylized scrolling branch pattern in relief, the inner border with key-fret pattern. Qing Dynasty period.

California Asian Art Auction Gallery is honored to offer the following lots from the collection of Ms. Beverley Jackson. Ms. Jackson was widely recognized as one of most renowned expert and connoisseur in Chinese textile and Kingfisher feather art in the world. Among one of the few Americans visiting mainland China during cultural revolution, her enthusiasm in Chinese textile collecting began in a 1975 trip to China, and later led to establishment of one of largest Chinese textile collection in the United States. Her collection of Qing textiles, especially imperial robes, were internationally known and exhibited in major museums, including Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Harvard Yenching library, and Victoria and Albert Museum of London, to name a few. As a prolific writer and researcher, she has written the definitive book on Mandarin rank badges Ladder to the Clouds. She was also well-known in the west studying Chinese Kingfisher feather art, writing the first book in the field, Kingfisher Blue in 2001. Her broad interests also include early 20th century Chinese clothing and footbinding, published in her books Shanghai Girl Gets All Dressed Up and Splendid Slippers.
