AN ARCHAIC JADE BEAR CARVING    漢 玉熊

The bear shown tilted to the left revealing it's large belly, its left knee raised, the head detailed with ferocious features and mouth open revealing sharp fangs, the stone is of celadon tone with extensive russet to dark brownish skin and inclusion to one half of body. Han Dynasty period.


Jade bear carved in upright form is relatively rare. A similar and larger piece, however cast in gilt-bronze, was sold in Christie's New York, formerly in the collection of Robert H. Ellsworth, on March 17, 2015, Lot 1.
