此龜型硯，玉制，扁平體，圓雕一龜，刀法簡括，雙目外凸，尖吻，頸前伸，屈肢有蹼爪，作爬行狀，神秘祥異。龜代表長壽和財富，被古人列為四靈之一。迄今所知的最早玉龜是新石器時代，其中紅山文化、良渚文化、含山文化和齊家文化遺存中皆有所見， 以紅山文化中發現者年代最早且數量最多。
